Slow Food's School Garden Guide

Every child deserves to grow up knowing where food comes from, how to grow it, cook it and share it, and how to be healthy. And now, thanks to the hard work of Andrew Nowak and his team of volunteer Slow Food leaders and garden coordinators across the country, the new School Garden Manual offers a "how to guide" to developing school gardens.

It includes best practices for design, implementation, curriculum, fundraising, volunteers and school policy.

Making the Garden to Cafeteria Connection

Serving garden grown veggies in school lunch or breakfast is becoming more and more popular. The goal is not that the garden is meant to be the soul source for veggie production, but rather to reinforce the connection to the soil that sustains us all. Some school food service directors have even been known to pay the garden program for the produce they use in the school meal. Just think how proud those little gardeners feel.
