Best Practices in Middle School Gardens
Middle school teachers, staff, students, volunteers and administrators across California are interested in establishing and sustaining instructional gardens. To build on the work that has been done at the elementary school level, the California Department of Education and the UC Davis Children's Garden Program visited inspirational school garden programs at junior high and middle schools. In these pages, through interviews, photographs, and sample curriculum, we highlight the unique contributions of each program to provide a landscape of ideas you can adapt to your school setting.

Grow LA Victory Garden Initiative
UC Cooperative Extension in Los Angeles County is pleased to launch the "Grow LA Victory Garden Initiative" in March and April 2010 for those who wish to grow their own fresh fruits and vegetables. This initiative will help new gardeners learn to start their own gardens quickly and easily in a container, in the backyard or at a community garden, bringing together local families and neighborhoods to share their experiences, skills and produce. Participants will be able to turn this new interest in gardening into successful, productive gardens that will generate positive changes in their homes by helping to lower grocery bills and enhance opportunities to eat healthy, nutritious foods.

For more information on the initiative, please contact Yvonne Savio, Common Ground Garden program manager, at (323) 260-3407, ydsavio@ucdavis.edu.

For information on the individual classes, please check the Calendar listings on Cooperative Extension's Web site.

The Summer Vegetable Garden
Date: Saturday, April 10
Time: 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
Location: Arcadia, CA
Instructor: John Lyons

Get up to speed on how to transition from the winter garden to the summer season. Soil preparation, warm season plant choices, correct placement, crop care and feeding will be explored. Organic pest control and good succession planting will also be a focus. A gardener by trade, John Lyons designs, installs and maintains edible landscapes, California Native gardens, orchards and wild hedgerows. Originally from Ireland, he has had gardens in Galway, London, Zurich, New York and Los Angeles. John will inspire, cajole and inform fellow gardeners to try new things, keep doing what they are doing, and dream new landscapes and plant-combo conspiracies.
