CA Department of Education: New Spring Training
Part II of Fresh Fruits and Vegetables: A Centerpiece for a Healthy School Environment
This free two-day training is designed for school personnel and community partners. It provides tools to support an increase of fresh fruits and vegetables on school campuses through fun, interactive, and skill-building activities. Download training flyer and register here.

Early registration is encouraged as space is limited.
Please bring your own coffee, tea, drinks and "brown-bag" lunch.

Upcoming Workshops:

  • Saturday, March 27, 2010: Sowing the Seeds of Wonder: Discovering the Garden in Early Childhood Education - Cost: $150/person.
    1 semester unit of graduate education credit available for an additional $60.
    Registration deadline, March 12.
  • Thursday and Friday, April 29-30, 2010: The Growing Classroom: Intro to Garden-Based Learning - Cost: $300/person. 1 semester unit of graduate education credit available for an additional $60 fee. Registration deadline, March 16.
  • Friday, May 14, 2010: Plant It, Grow It, Eat It: Garden-Enhanced Nutrition Education - Cost: $150/person. 1 semester unit of graduate education credit available for an additional $60. Registration deadline, April 30.

    Occidental Arts & Ecology Center
    School Garden Teacher Training and Support Program
    Since 1997 OAEC's School Garden Program, housed at the 80-acre site in western Sonoma County, has trained over 450 teachers, principals, and core parent volunteers in 173 school garden programs in Northern California, the Greater Bay Area, and beyond. The foundation of the program is the five-day residential summer training which offers a combination of lecture, resource materials and hands-on sessions on organic gardening, permaculture, cooking from the garden, team building, garden design, fundraising, art in the garden, and more.     Funding Opportunities

    Cooking Up Change
    Cooking Up Change challenges teams of high school and college students to create a healthful and delicious school meal that meets the Institute of Medicine nutrition standards, incorporates a local food item, draws from ingredients commonly available to food service, and can be easily prepared in a school kitchen. Finalists will prepare their recipes in Detroit for a prestigious panel of judges. Conference participants will sample the teams' delicious creations.
    Submit your recipes online by March 26, 2010.

    Real Food Is...
    2010 National Video Contest challenges students to define what real food means to them by creating a short video that completes the phrase "Real Food is..." Created by the National Farm to School Network and sponsored by the Lunch Box Project, this contest is open to K-12 and college students and runs until March 29, 2010. The winners will receive $1,000 and an all expenses paid trip to the conference to show their videos during the opening plenary. More info is available here.
