Cost: $150, 1 unit of graduate education credit available for $60

Learn how to implement garden activities in a pre-school setting. We'll also discuss basic gardening skills, appropriate garden design, safe plants for pre-school gardens, and garden art projects and songs. You'll receive a pre-school activity packet with activities and songs for teaching throughout the year. Learn more here.

Kids, Submit Your Own "Vision Video" for Food Independence Day
Food Independence Day is a grassroots group of individuals encouraging others to celebrate this 4th of July and the entire summer by eating food grown locally. The "Why I'm a Victory Grower" video campaign is a way for kids who love garden food to share their stories and celebrate food independence.

To participate and receive a free one-year membership and a packet of seeds from Seed Savers, log on to TEL-A-VISION to access the free tools that will help you easily create a vision video. Tell us why you're a Victory Grower and how that affects who you want to be and what you want to do in the future. Maybe you just really like playing in the dirt, but deep down, gardening, farming or otherwise raising good food supports the American economy, preserves natural resources and can help stamp out hunger.

Click here for more information and instructions to create videos. You can view sample videos here. Teachers can use the program in the classroom and there is a general curriculum instructions page available for them on the Tel-a-vision Web site. Application Deadline: September 1, 2009

Mad City Chickens Documentary is Coming to Town, and Davis May Never Be the Same!
Mad City Chickens, a documentary film by Tarazod Films, will be screened at the Richard Brunelle Performing Arts Theater at Davis High School (315 E. 14th St., Davis, CA) on August 8. The event is a benefit for the Davis Farm to School Connection. The filmmakers will be in attendance for a reception in the lobby at 6:30 pm, the film screening at 8 pm and a post-film Q & A session. Three years in the making, the 79 minute documentary is a sometimes serious, sometimes whimsical look at the people who keep urban chickens in their backyards.

Tickets are available online by visiting the Davis Farm to School Web site or by clicking here. They will also be available at The Davis Food Co-op after July 28 and at the door. (Adults: $10, Seniors & Students: $7, Children 11/under: Free)

Lowe's Toolbox for Education Accepting Applications for K-12 Public School Projects
The Fall 2009 cycle is open for the Lowe's Charitable and Educational Foundation Toolbox for Education grant program. Through the program, Lowe's will donate a total of $5 million to U.S. public schools and public school parent teacher groups at more than one thousand public schools. For the 2009-10 program, Lowe's Charitable and Educational Foundation will increase its focus on basic one-time project needs.

Any individual nonprofit public K-12 school or parent group associated with a nonprofit public K-12 school is eligible to apply. Parent groups (PTO, PTA, etc.) that are applying must have an independent tax ID number and official 501(c)(3) status from the IRS. Groups that do not have 501(c)(3) status should apply through their school. Applicant school must be more than two years old. Preschools are not eligible. Grants may be requested for amounts between $2,000 and $5,000.

The deadline for submitting applications for this grant cycle is October 16, 2009. If 1,500 applications are received before the application deadline, however, the application process will be closed. Visit the Toolbox for Education Web site for complete application guidelines.

K-12 Field Trips Funded
Target Field Trip Grants
The Target Field Trip Grants program provides funds for K-12 field trips in order to give students throughout the country the opportunity to explore more of the world outside the classroom. For the 2009-2010 school year, 5,000 grants of up to $800 each will be awarded to educators, teachers, principals, paraprofessionals, and classified staff who are employed by accredited K-12 public, private, or charter schools. Types of eligible field trips include art, science, and cultural museum visits; community service and civic projects; and career enrichment opportunities. Funds may be used to cover trip-related costs such as transportation, ticket fees, resource materials, and supplies. Online applications will be available from August 5 through November 3, 2009. Visit the Target website to learn more about the program.
